Although there is still a long way to go, the mainstream art world has begun to recognize the work of African American artists. For centuries, black artists have struggled to break into the mainstream art world. Tyler the Creator's Grammy for Best Rap Album has fueled hopes for greater recognition for artists of color. Tyler, the Creator, was a groundbreaking artist in the genre, despite the fact that his work did not fit into traditional rap categories. The Grammy win is an important indicator of the struggles that Black artists face in achieving success in the industry. Despite this, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Tyler the Creator and his work, "Igor," are two artists who have taken the world by storm. While many people know the works of the renowned African-American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, the work of other black artists is less well-known. The work of the abstract expressionist Norman Lewis and Sam Gilliam are slowly collecting in places of honor. The works of a single African-American artist, notably Norman Lewis, are valued at nearly $200 million. Norman Lewis is still working, but his records are slowly trickling in. There is a growing tide of black artists who are breaking out of the shadows and into mainstream art. In the United States, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture opened in September 2016 and validated the work of black artists and relegated to the margins. The museum reported that visitors flocked the museum, with some days drawing as many as 30,000 people. In the United States, African-American artists have been making history for decades. But, unlike the success of black musicians, black art hasn't been as celebrated. Over the past five to 10 years, however, black-made work has become a prominent part of popular culture. Two recent films that have captured the attention of mainstream audiences include Moonlight, a coming-of-age story about a black gay man, and Hidden Figures, about the stories of three African-American women who worked at NASA during the Space Race. The Artist Recognition Awards are given out annually at the Nova Scotia Arts Endowment Fund's Creative Nova Scotia Awards Gala. To be eligible to be nominated, artists must have received some professional recognition in their field. This recognition is open to all art disciplines, but cannot be shared between the Black Artist Recognition Award and the Portia White Prize.
